Affirmation of Baptism / Confirmation
Purpose and Mission
The Affirmation of Baptism programs purpose and mission is first, to support parents in their role as primary educators in the faith development of their children. Secondly, we want to support our young people as they strive to mature in their faith, grow in their understanding of the promises God made to them in their baptism, and strengthen their commitment to live as children of God. Thirdly, Affirmation of Baptism offers our young people an opportunity to be a part of a community of believers who are encouraged to live out their faith in lives of service.
Vision
The vision of Affirmation of Baptism if for the young people and adults involved to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ and with each other, and through those relationships grow in the understanding of God's boundless love and grace for each of them.
Objectives
The objectives of Affirmation of Baptism are to provide instruction in the Christian faith through:
-
The study of the Bible.
-
The study of Lutheran doctrines and Luther's Small Catechism.
-
Participation in small group study with an adult guide.
-
Participation in music and drama.
-
Participation in service projects, both in the church community and the community we live in.
Classes
The classes are for students currently in 7th and 8th grades. Classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. September through April. All students and guides meet in the sanctuary for a large group presentation (led by a pastor or staff person). The large group presentation lasts about one hour. The remainder of the meeting time is with small groups (the same group all year) and a guide. During this time students "check-in" sharing their high and low points of the week and discussing the material presented in large group.
Affirmation of Baptism Service
A special Affirmation of Baptism Service is held in the afternoon on the first Sunday of May for those students in the 8th grade. The students participate in leading the worship service.
