2024 Sermon Theme

2024 Sermon Themes “Living Out God’s Kingdom”

God’s timeless plan for our world remains steadfast since creation. Intended as a harmonious community of love, humanity’s choice of selfishness diverged from this divine vision. Despite setbacks, God’s persistent love is evident in Scripture, offering a glimpse of a peaceful kingdom. Jesus, the promised Messiah, embodied this kingdom in his life and ministry, overcoming sin through his sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection. Empowered by his Spirit, Jesus entrusted his followers with spreading this transformative message worldwide, promising the ultimate arrival of God’s kingdom and the end of death.

(Easter: May 5 to Pentecost Sunday: May 19, 2024)
The Power of God’s Love
Not only are we called to live God’s love, but God gives us the power to do so. Love makes our actions truly worthwhile, as Paul beautifully describes (1 Corinthians 13). God gives us gifts through the Holy Spirit so that we can accomplish our mission as the Body of Christ (Acts 2; 1 Corinthians 12). It is the power of God’s love that creates God’s kingdom on earth and will bring resurrection for us all (1 Corinthians 15).

This weekend – May 11-12, 2024
To prepare for service read 1 Corinthians 1:15-26, 51-57
Paul defends the resurrection of Jesus. He reminds the Corinthians about those who saw the resurrected Jesus. Paul ends with the good news that death is not final. The final word is our victory over death through Jesus.

Eggs For Education

Support our sister congregation, Manantiales del Desierto, with Eggs for Education. Public education in El Salvador may be technically free, but for many children, accessing quality education is far from easy. From hidden costs to financial barriers, numerous challenges hinder their educational journey, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting their potential. Beyond tuition fees, families often grapple with additional expenses such as uniforms, transportation, supplies, and extracurricular fees. These seemingly minor costs can quickly add up, becoming significant obstacles for…

Together In Mission (Holy Cross Edition)

At Holy Cross, we are committed to antiracism and understand that it requires more than just words. It is a journey of self-reflection, education, and action. Recently, we organized our own “Together in Mission,” facilitated by Dr. Joyce Caldwell and Pastor Marilyn Miller. Our leadership, staff, and teams came together to assess our congregation’s identity and stance on antiracism. This learning process involved role-playing, discussions, and introspection, and we engaged in planning how our teams will help lead this work.…

Loneliness and Social Isolation Linked to Serious Health Conditions

Loneliness and social isolation in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States and putting them at risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions. A report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) points out that more than one-third of adults aged 45 and older feel lonely, and nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated.1 Older adults are at increased risk for loneliness…
